How to Create a Clean & Professional Color Palette

Not ready to invest in branding but looking for some quick ways to clean up your digital presence? One of the best (and easiest) ways to ensure consistency in your social media accounts, website, and marketing materials is to stick to a color palette.

Here are our best tips on how to create a solid color palette from scratch:

  1. Condense Your Primary Color Scheme to 6 Tones or Less.

Our palettes are typically composed of 6 colors (sometimes we extend to tints and shades to create more dimension) but 6 is a great place to start! Including too may different colors gets visually confusing quickly, especially if you’re new to the art of palette development. If you feel like you can go up a level, add in 25%, 50%, 75%, and 200% of your primary 6 colors! This will give you much more to work with when developing marketing materials and other creative work.

2. Take Your Business and Audience into Consideration.

All of our color palettes are crafted intentionally after the personality of the business we’re working with and what type of clients they’re looking to attract. Find a few words that describe your business like warm / inviting, calm, energetic, professional, chic, traditional, playful, etc. Once you’ve found your vibe, pick colors that align with that. *Beware of using trendy colors unless you want to switch things up often. Color psychology will be your best friend here! Picking out a color palette for a business should never be about your personal preferences or what you think looks pretty. It’s about using color as a marketing tool to grow your business and choices should be intentional!

3. Create a Diverse Composition.

Create a composition. A great color palette has a solid mix of bold and neutral colors - if all of your colors scream “look at me!” it can get overwhelming and nothing stands out. If all of your colors look the same and there’s little contrast, there’s no dimension. There’s a fine line in-between that you’ll have to coast on. Pinterest is a great place to look for inspiration, but we highly suggest not copying another color palette directly. If you take the time to make strategic choices, it’ll pay off big time! In the end, you’ll stand out, and it’ll be customly built with your business in mind.
